Palmer-Bawden finish 17th

After playing a solid qualification tournament, the Aussie team of Becchara Palmer and Louise Bawden have given a solid account of themselves in the main draw.

They pushed the Swiss team, Kuhn-Zumkehr to three sets, in the end losing 2-1 (17-21, 21-18, 15-9) in 56 minutes, but pulled out a gutsy win against the Italians, Gioria-Momoli 0-2 (18-21, 23-25), which got them out of their pool into the elimination round where they met with the Georian team of Saka-Rtveloto.

In another three setter, they lost 2-1 (15-21, 21-18, 15-12) in 54 minutes.

Obviously a lot of room for improvement here, but these girls are starting to show some authority on court. Particularly Becchara, who’s physical presence and power has improved dramatically since I last saw her.

From the performance this week, there is certainly a lot to look forward to for the Australian women’s program.
