This is a great little drill that will help you to learn how to shoot a beach volleyball and see your opponent while you are making a shot.

The video shows it perfectly, sop not much to add apart from emphasising the importance of the coach in this drill. The coach should make big moves, so that he/she pushes the player to hit close to the line. It’s no good hitting a ball perfectly to the coach if he is standing 2 meters inside the side line. That is not the sort of shot you want to practice.

So if your coach is on the angle, make sure you practice your best sharp angle shot, not just an easy shot that the coach can catch. In most cases you don’t want to practice shots that land anywhere further than 50cm from the side line.

This is another variation on the “pepper” that involves three players and quite a lot of running For that reason, it’s a very good warm up.

The diagrams below show how it works.

Start with player 1 and 2 next to each other at one end, and player 3 opposite at the other end.

Step 1

Player 1 sets to player 3, then runs to the other end (following the set)

Step 2

Player 3 hits at player 2, who digs the ball back.

Step 3

Player 3 sets the ball back to player 2, and follows the set, running to the other end</li

Player 1 is now ready to step in for the dig

Player 2 hits at player 1

Continue in this sequence until you are warm, or bored, or both

Each player performs this sequence of skills:
Set
Run to the other end
Wait
Dig
Spike
Set
Run to the other end
Wait
Dig
Spike
etc…..

Here is a simple drill to train your jump serve.

Draw a line about two thirds of the way back in the court and use that as your service line.

Practice jump serving from this reduced distance. You should find that you can hit it harder, with more angles.

Work on the short cross court serve and the hard line serve. Keep the ball low across the net.

Gradually move the service line back until you are back to the baseline, but try to keep serving with the same speed and angle.

This drill is designed to help you to develop a wider variety of service, and to push the boundaries of speed and angle that you are jump serving at the moment.

This jump serving drill is also great for receivers. If you have more players around, put a receiving team at the other end, and play a side out drill.

This is a simple warm up drill that makes warming up a little more interesting and is good practice for basic skills.

After a light jog and stretch, start a 2 on 2 game to 21 points.

Each change of ends, the rules change to incorporate more activity and a wider range of skills.

Rules for the first 7 points: 2 touches allowed per team. Under arm digging only.

Rules for the next 7 points: 2 touches allowed per team, under arm digging and hitting or poking without jump. (block jump is allowed)

Rules for the next 7 points: 3 touches allowed per team, all skills, but no jumping, (block jump is allowed)

Rules for the next 7 points: Normal game play, but no power hitting, only roll shots and cut shots.

Rules for the next 7 points: If the game is still going, everything is allowed until finished.
